The sky is green! Aug 31

What to write about today?  Honestly I have no idea.  For the first time in a few weeks I feel pretty good my work.  I am almost caught up, AW starts tomorrow, and if things aren’t too crazy I might be able to really spend some time training AW properly.

Hurricane Earl is headed this way.  Well more towards the beach where M’s parents are.  M talked to his mom today and we are their “evacuation plan” should Earl head for them.  While I won’t be disappointed if he brings some rain our way, my heart will go out to a knottie whose wedding is scheduled in the Outer Banks this weekend.  I can’t imagine my thought process if I were her.

Way back when, or the mid-90’s, Hurricane Opal came up the Gulf Coast.  We lived outside of Montgomery so hurricanes were not super uncommon but  most of the time if they made it to us they had been downgraded to tropical storms.  Well not Opal, she rolled through the coast and pretty much took the highway straight to our town, 3 hours in-land and north.  I remember the lights went out as she rolled in.  The transformers on the power lines blew all night.  We had candles lit to provide light, which added to everything going on.  And when it would lighting the sky was green.  It was really quite amazing.  (I guess the algae from the ocean made the sky appear green?)

The next morning my parents and I hopped in the car to see what the town looked like.  Mostly there were a lot of downed trees but overall things weren’t too bad.  At least not that I remember.

It’s funny the nostalgia I feel as I sit here and type about that night.  While I couldn’t tell you the day or year or much more then green lightning, it brings back memories of warm fuzzy times.
