Day 1 Jul 26

Back story:  When I was 19 I was diagnosed with a Mitral Valve Prolapse or MVP.  Basically it means that the valve in my heart doesn’t close all the way and can cause palpitations and fluttering.  Not really a big deal but something that can bother you from time to time.

A couple of months ago I was referred to a cardiologist because I felt like my heart had been acting up more recently.   They did some testing, echos, stress tests, hooked me up to a heart monitor for a few weeks, all to see what was going on.  On my follow up, the doctor told me that for  my age my heart looked great.  There was very little leakage from my valve and that it was no longer classified as MVP.  I guess they changed the criteria several years ago.  I liked the doctor but he didn’t do a great job of explaining what the next steps should be.  He told me I could continue to take my meds if I wanted and I was done.

A few weeks ago I went to make an appointment with my GP, only to find out she was no longer at the practice, so I made an appointment with another doctor there to get my heart meds refilled.  I have to say, I’m still not sure how I feel about the new doc, but she was if anything very thorough.  She took the time to really explain to me what the cardiologist found, the meds I was on, and what they did and why I no longer needed them.  She also said that she wanted to do some blood work to check a few things.  Well on Friday I got my lab results back.  Ohhhh yeah, ummmm I have some changes to make.  According to the results my cholesterol is high (although that runs on my dad’s side and it’s not too high) but the more disturbing result was my CRP (?) level.  This measures your cardiovascular health.  Normal levels should be in the 1-2 range.  Mine, 4.9.  I think this means I am high risk for heart disease.  There was a lot of “increase cardio” on the lab results.  M was pretty concerned this level was so high.  My thought was, “no wonder I feel like I’m gonna die when I work out.”  HA!  But seriously this means there are going to be some changes at Casa de Edwards.

M has decided that we are hitting the gym again.   Which really is good.  We both need to get up and move a little more.  And while M is better about eating healthier then I do, it looks like the menu at home is about to change.  I am going to start looking for things that we can add more veggies too.  And I will probably start buying veggies at the store to cook.

So wish me luck as we begin our “K to fit” cause tonight.
