First and foremost, Happy Birthday M!\u00c2\u00a0 I love you!\u00c2\u00a0 Secondly I really hope your cake this year tastes as good as it looks.<\/p>\n

Yesterday I said I would talk about the ghosts of birthday cakes past.\u00c2\u00a0 Today I will post the pics.\u00c2\u00a0 The good, the bad and yes the UGLY!\u00c2\u00a0 Let me also say that I LOVE to bake.\u00c2\u00a0 I really do.\u00c2\u00a0 I’m not sure where this love came from but if there is baking to be done, I’m in.<\/p>\n

M’s 30th birthday.\u00c2\u00a0 I was really excited that I was going to make him a cake, we’d only been dating a few months and I was excited to show off my skill.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course I told him, “I’m a GREAT baker.”\u00c2\u00a0 However his birthday happened to fall right in the middle of my move.\u00c2\u00a0 My mom had already moved my kitchen stuff to the townhouse but I was still in my apartment.\u00c2\u00a0 When I discovered my baking tins were at the townhouse I decided to just run to the store instead of across town.\u00c2\u00a0 I found some silicone forms for about $3.00 each and I was sold.\u00c2\u00a0 I went home and started baking.\u00c2\u00a0 Everything was going pretty well until I tried to remove the cakes from the forms.\u00c2\u00a0 They basically fell apart.\u00c2\u00a0 I tried to save them but well, as you can see……disaster.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh and the frosting pretty much went south too.<\/p>\n

This will forever be referred to as the grand canyon cake.\u00c2\u00a0 In my defense, the thing was pretty tasty.<\/p>\n

M’s 31st birthday.\u00c2\u00a0 I decided to get creative, I mean come on anything has to be better then the grand canyon right?\u00c2\u00a0 I talked to a friend from HS who started baking to get a fondant recipe.\u00c2\u00a0 Since M loves red velvet I decided to cover it in fondant.\u00c2\u00a0 Little did I realize red velvet is a pretty soft cake.\u00c2\u00a0 Hence the 31st cake.<\/p>\n

Not a horrible first attempt at fondant and it wasn’t actually that bad.\u00c2\u00a0 But as you can see the cake didn’t support the weight very well.<\/p>\n

All of this brings us to M’s 32nd birthday.\u00c2\u00a0 I told him that I wasn’t doing ANYTHING fancy this year.\u00c2\u00a0 Just a cake.\u00c2\u00a0 So he said he would like carrot cake.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ve never made carrot cake.\u00c2\u00a0 Nor have I made carrot cake from a box.\u00c2\u00a0 I baked the cake last night, let them cool and then iced them.\u00c2\u00a0 The cake looks pretty nice.\u00c2\u00a0 Now if only it tastes good too.\u00c2\u00a0 I guess we will find out tonight.\u00c2\u00a0 *Crosses fingers*\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Wish me luck.<\/p>\n

As you can see my cake making skills vary, a lot.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ve actually made him several cakes over the years.\u00c2\u00a0 All of which put the grand canyon cake to shame.\u00c2\u00a0 I still blame the crappy silicone forms but hey, what’s done is done.<\/p>\n

Here’s to a great birthday and a wonderful cake!<\/p>\n
